CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

I had an opportunity to work in the district as well as the tertiary centers for my ophthalmic training. All my house officer's posts were done in the teaching hospitals of Mumbai, where I have gained a wide range of experience in medical and surgical ophthalmology.

K.E.M. hospital is the largest municipal hospital in Maharashtra. It has 1500 beds, and all the specialty and super specialty departments are well developed. It is in demand for placement by foreign exchange students. During my residency here I have worked under Prof. Rumi Jahangir who is a Vitreo-retinal surgeon and Prof D.Y. Dastor. They have helped us master the art of using the instruments like Slit Lamp Bio Microscopy, using 78D, 90D, Indirect Ophthalmoscopy, Gonioscopy, Applantation Tonometry for clinical assessment and diagnosis in the out patient elinic. On the surgical training I was on call for the management of Ocular emergencies and trauma. Assisted all major vitreo-retinal surgeries like Retinal detachment, Vitrectomy, intra ocular foreign body removal, internal limiting membrane peeling. I have performed SICS, Phacoemulsification for Cataract Extraction, Trabeculectomy, Keratoplasty, Pterygium.

.J. group of hospitals, which is the teaching hospital and a tertiary center, has 3000 beds. I was attached to this Institute as an Asst. Professor (Lecturer) and was working under Dr. T.P. Lahane who has a special interest in Phacoemusification, Oculoplasty and Associate Prof. Dr. Ragini Parekh, who is specialised in Phacoemusification and Glaucoma, and working for eye camps. I have done a number of diagnostic and surgical eye camps in the rural areas of Maharashtra as a part ofthe blindness control project of WHO. I have regularly used the B scan, OCT, UBM under the supervision of Dr. Deepak Bhatt who has a special interest in ocular radiology.

At Bombay Hospital, Mumbai my training was under Dr. R. C. Patel and did clinical and research work on glaucoma & non-penetrating glaucoma surgeries.

At Arvind Eye Hospital I did my Fellowship in "Lasers in Diabetic Retinopathy and Medical Retina".

During this project we studied 25 cases, which were operated by trabeculectomy, and 25 cases operated by non-penetrating trabeculectomy, and in both groups triple surgery was done.

This topic was accepted by the University of Mumbai for the Masters degree in Ophthalmology, and this was done under the guidance of Prof. R.C. Patel of Bombay Hospital & Institute of Medical Sciences, Mumbai, India.

The conclusion was that NPT works for mild to moderate cases, trabeculectomy is best for the higher IOP and has stood the test of time.
